Goodbye Oscar, Hello Liebster!

in Resources and Reviews

Now that the Academy Awards are over, it’s time for an accolade that really matters — the Liebster Award.

Never heard of it? Me neither. That is until I got word that Culture Every Day had been awarded one for being a “best kept secret blog with less than 200 followers.”

See, I knew size didn’t matter. :-)

Anyway…I’m thrilled about my Liebster because it gives me an excuse the opportunity to introduce you to five of my favorite blogs.

My nominees for the Liebster Award are…

Five Fantastic Blogs for Culture Fans

Slowly-by-Slowly — Liz chronicles her Turkish-American “cross-cultural road trip” of a marriage, deftly blending real-life anecdotes, thoughtful analysis and Karagöz puppets. My favorite post to date? The Oppositional Q or Only Allah is Perfect.

MarocMama — Amanda is my go-to source for all things Moroccan. Just reading one of her recipe posts makes me hungry. Plus, her Pinterest Moroccan-style boards are exquisite and she’s even got weekly meal plan boards! Along with mouth-watering recipes, Amanda also writes lovely evocative posts like The Kasbah Door.

Born Again Brazilian — Erica’s wry riffs on her life as an expat in Brazil are a hoot! And her 366 Day Brazilian Challenge is a real inspiration. I just might take a cue from this “midwestern babe in Sao Paolo” and try a similar challenge this summer when my family goes to Turkey.

The Displaced Nation — There’s never a dull post on this collaborative group blog written by and for a self-described “motley” band of “expats, rex-pats, repats, global nomads, third culture kids (TCKs), internationals, armchair travelers and the like.” For a taste of this site’s Neo-Victorian aesthetic and acerbic humor check out Five Proverbs on Cross-cultural Relations by Pocahontas.

Albany Kids — Travel writer and photographer Sandra Foyt founded this family travel site “for curious minds, giving hearts and adventurous spirits.” Sounds like us, doesn’t it? I’m a fan of the kid-tested itineraries like Visiting New York City’s Chinatown with Kids..

Çok tessekürler to Liz for including me in her Liebster list and congrats to my fellow winners!

I hope you’ll check out these blogs and let me know what you think!
